This policy explains how artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as chatbots and image generators, may be used in content we publish.
For authors
- AI tools cannot be listed as an author. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy and originality of their work.
- AI tools may be used to help with language, grammar and readability. Authors must tell us how they used AI tools when they submit.
- AI tools must not be used to invent data, results, quotes or references. All references must be checked by the author against the original source.
- Never enter confidential or identifiable patient information into AI tools.
- AI-generated or AI-altered images must be clearly labelled and are not allowed in photo stories, which must show real events.
Where AI tools have been used substantially, a short statement will be published with the article.
For our editorial team
We may use AI tools for tasks such as checking spelling or suggesting headlines. Editorial decisions are always made by people. We will not upload unpublished submissions to AI tools that use the content to train their models.
